Google Not Developing Pixel Phone At Rs 20,000 Price Point
Google is not launching an affordable Pixel phone aimed at a market like India. The company has remained loyal to the Pixel a lineup for the past few years, and will likely continue to do so. But Google is clear that a Pixel phone for almost $200 (roughly Rs. 16,200) would not be possible if it wants to offer a quality product.
The comments were made by Nanda Ramachandran, head of Google Mobile Business in a recent interview. He noted that the company certainly believes there is a cost to integrating AI into its hardware and offering a pure software experience, making it difficult for Google to work with the low-cost Pixel phone. Google has somewhat tried its hand with budget devices with the Android One and Android Go projects.
The company even decided that budget phones needed Android in a muted avatar, which also failed to make a serious dent in the market after several attempts. These incidents are enough for the company to realize its mistake and not try another project for a so-called budget Android/Pixel phone.
Running something like the Pixel requires older heads that pay, and yes, it goes without saying that providing a clean software interface (without ads or bloatware) also comes with the cost of the products. So the company isn’t entirely wrong in admitting that launching an affordable Pixel phone is unrealistic given all the market issues. Google has launched the new premium-level Pixel 8 series and seems to be continuing to develop its side in the AI arena.
The new Pro cameras have been updated with advanced AI technology that promises to compete with the best in the industry. Unfortunately, we’ll never see Google release these features in a mass product, which would have really disrupted the market and forced others to take notice.
